Think Purple, Live Green for Earth Day at TCU
Posted on April 22, 2024, by Colleen Wyrick
Happy Earth Day! Today, we celebrate and raise awareness about our planet, how to
care for it, and how TCU and its students help contribute to a healthier Earth. Throughout
the year, we focus on maintaining our campus environment, hosting volunteer opportunities
in natural spaces near the university, and offering courses in Sustainability. In fact, TCU was yet again "named a Tree Campus Higher Education Institution by the Arbor Day Foundation for the eighth consecutive year, recognizing the university’s
commitment to caring for campus trees."
But our concern for the environment goes beyond classes and campus landscaping and
beautiful trees. One incredible organization on campus actively works across several
avenues to promote and implement positive environmental practices: TCU Sustainability.
About TCU Sustainability
TCU Sustainability is a group of faculty, staff, students, and alumni who have made
tremendous accomplishments in sustainability both on and off campus. The group includes
faculty from at least eleven departments across campus, staff from administrative
offices and groundskeeping, plus students from Student Government (SGA), the Environmental
Club, TCU Sustainability Committee, the Chancellor's Leadership program, and many
other individuals who are passionate about sustainability.
Their goal is to promote sustainability (meeting the needs of the present without
compromising future generations’ ability to meet their own needs) within the areas
of:
- Academics
- Environmental Stewardship
- Health and Well-being
- Campus Operations
TCU is committed to social equity, economic security, and environmental protection.
Sustainability strengthens the mission of educating individuals to think and act as
ethical leaders and responsible citizens in the global community.
Get Involved!
General membership in the committee is open to all TCU students, staff, faculty, and
alumni. To join, simply send an email expressing your interest to
sustainability@tcu.edu. It's easy to engage in sustainability beyond celebrating Earth Day!
Students may also apply to become sustainability committee interns. Interns can receive
course credit for their participation or payment, so it's a great way to further your
studies or pursue an on-campus job.
The current TCU Sustainability Intern is Bella Niño, a junior Geology major with minors
in Energy and Sustainability from San Antonio, Texas. She's passionate about the future
of TCU, and can't wait to welcome new students into her departments and lead them
in their sustainability efforts.
"I am beyond excited to be back on the TCU Sustainability Committee’s internship program
as the sole intern this semester. My goal in this position is to help educate and
spread awareness about local and global sustainability initiatives on the TCU campus
and DFW community. Looking forward to a great year!"
